Declaration calls for European Primate Test Ban

Posted: 30 April 2007. Updated: 16 March 2012

On April 24th (World Lab Animal Day) a Written Declaration calling for a Europe-wide ban on primate experiments was launched at the European Parliament with an ADI/NAVS reception and publicity event.

The New Written Declaration: “Urges the Commission, the Council of Ministers and the European Parliament to use the revision process of Directive 86/609/EC as an opportunity to:
i. Make ending the use of apes and wild caught monkeys in scientific experiments an urgent priority;
ii. Establish a timetable for replacing the use of all primates in scientific experiments with alternatives.

This Declaration has cross-party, international support and is sponsored by John Bowis (UK – European People’s Party), Martine Roure (France – Party of European Socialists), Jens Holm (Sweden – European United Left), Rebecca Harms (Germany – Greens) and Mojca Drcar Murko (Slovenia – Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe).

The launch event was also backed by MEPs Liz Lynne, Caroline Lucas, Sajjad Karim, Carl Shlyter, Robert Evans and Paulo Casaca.

The reception was addressed by the MEPs backing the Declaration and Jan Creamer and Tim Phillips of ADI/NAVS, and Claude Reiss of Antidote, and our My Mate’s a Primate DVD was screened. Outside the Parliament, MEPs participated in a humorous, but nonetheless poignant, event where they appeared as the primate they are working to protect.

The Declaration will fall on 7th September and we need to secure the signatures of half the MEPs in the Parliament by then. If you care about animals it is vital that you write to your MEPs TODAY urging them to sign Written Declaration 40/2007.
