Good Charities Guide 2009 Criteria

Questionnaires were sent to many charities in order to determine their current status regarding the funding or use of animals in research. Many charities did not respond to our requests or asked not to be included in the guide. This is where supporters contribution can be extremely helpful in gathering information. There are a few simple things which supporters can do to find information regarding a charity, if they are not on our list:

1. Do a simple search on the charities website for “animal policy”. This may bring up the organisations statement on animal use, if they have a clear policy.
2. Call the organisation and explain that you are looking to donate to a charity which does not carry out or fund research involving animals. If you are given an answer over the phone, ask for written confirmation, which could then be passed to us for our records.
3. Write a letter to the charity explaining your position. This can sometimes be more successful as post is likely to be processed and dealt with, giving you a definitive written response.

The criteria which are used to determine a charities status for the Good Charities Guide are as follows:

Good: two ticks – A charity receives two ticks only if they have confirmed that they have a policy not to carry out or fund animal research and this is a permanent policy or one for the foreseeable future.

Good: one tick – If a charity does not currently fund or carry out animal experiments, according to the response which we received from them, they are awarded one tick. It is important to note, however, that these charities will not have stated that this is a permanent policy, may have previously been involved in animal testing and may have said that they agree, in principle, with animal testing. These charities are given a tick, with caution. It is advised that supporters check the status of these charities before making a donation.

Bad – These charities currently fund or carry out research involving animals.

Undetermined – These are charities for which there was insufficient information to determine which category they belong to. The charity may not have filled in the questionnaire fully, or may have responded by asking not to be included in the guide.
