At Charing Cross & Westminster Medical School of 52,435 animals bred at the laboratory, just 15,198 were used in experiments. 33,348 animals were gassed as surplus to requirements.
In the gas chamber they would scramble over each other, desperate to escape death. The vast numbers meant that live animals were thrown into bin bags with their dead cage mates.
