The use of wild-caught animals

1

In the face of public concern, the use of wild-caught primates in UK laboratories is cited as being banned. But there is a proviso. Wild primates can be used in UK laboratories if the researcher can convince the Home Office that their use is necessary. Consequently, NAVS investigations in the laboratories have revealed that:-

Baboons have been snatched from the wild for experiments. Was there an important scientific reason for this? No, there were simply not enough captive-bred animals available at the time.

Groundhogs filmed by the NAVS at St Mary’s Hospital Medical School once ran free - before being trapped in the USA and sold for vivisection in the UK. The COP states: “Animals caught in the wild...should be kept in conditions which conform as nearly as possible to their natural habitat in such respects as light intensities, food etc.” There was no evidence of compliance for these animals, which were kept in stacks of small cages with some shredded paper for bedding.
